The Republic of Bashkortostan Opera and Ballet company was created in 1938 and presented its first ballet in 1940. In 1944 it enjoyed a great success with the patriotic ballet "Song of the Cranes" by Zaguir Ismagilov and Leo Stepanov. A year later, Rudolf Nureyev attended one of the performances - it the revelation that led him to begin traditional dancing before later joining the ballet troupe.
Since its inception, the company has presented over 100 shows and performed in the Netherlands, China, Mexico, Brazil, Portugal and the United States. The company is also a member of the association of musical theatres and participates in a large number of festivals including the "Russian Seasons", the "Golden Mask", and the Bangkok dance festival. The troupe has been collaborating for years with Yuri Grigorovitch, the former Bolshoi ballet director, who has staged seven shows in Ufa. On his initiative the Rudolf Nureyev Festival was founded in 1993 - it was in Ufa that Nureyev took his first artistic steps.
